We have a similar program here in St. Louis, and I'm nervous that Ameren UE (our local energy company) will not use the extra money for good. So I decided to offset our energy use through Terrapass instead. At least through their program, I know I'm supporting green energy until we can actually purchase it for our own direct use.

Is that because there is no competition in your area? We use PG&E here, totally monopoly. The only reason I trust them is because the state of California pays them a lot of $$$ and audits them frequently.

If you read the language carefully on their site...they never promise to add to a grid. They qualify everything with "if available" and "when possible." When I spoke with them they said whenever possible they add to a grid and "create a market for green energy." What percentage of money goes to which they couldn't say. I'm glad to here they give you a certificate with exact numbers. Perhaps I will have to dig a little deeper to find some trust.

I had no idea Con Ed Solutions Green Power wasn't actually providing green power! Where did you see anything on this??? I've been so happy getting my little certificate each year telling me how much wind and hydro power has been donated to the grid!

How's about this compromise:

Take all the wads of extra money you have floating around and buy a couple shares of a publicly-held renewable-resource energy generating plant?

You know, because with two toddlers and a work-from-home job, I'm sure you have spare cash falling out your pickle green ass....

OR, write a letter to your local and state reps, as well as the PSC, and ask them why buying renewable energy in THE LARGEST CITY IN THE US IS IM-FUCKING-POSSIBLE.

You go, girl!
